Our Impact

Why Skateboarding?

At The Skatepark Project, we believe that skateboarding is more than just a sport; it’s a community. Skateboarding is a powerful way for kids, and people of all ages, to build resilience and confidence, enhance their well-being, and create long-lasting relationships.

Today’s youth are increasingly grappling with anxiety and depression, often fueled by social media and socioeconomic barriers. At the same time, they are spending less time outdoors, with American children averaging just 4-7 minutes of free, unstructured outdoor play per day. This decline in physical activity has contributed to rising childhood obesity rates, which have more than tripled since 1980, along with broader mental and physical health concerns. Accessible, unstructured outdoor play is a vital part of the solution.

Action sports, enjoyed by over 17 million people in the U.S., provide a powerful tool for positive youth development. Skateboarding, in particular, builds resilience, confidence, and a strong sense of belonging. Skateparks are more than just recreational spaces—they are creative hubs, community centers, and safe havens that promote self-expression and meaningful connections.

What We Do:

The Skatepark Project supports communities across the country in creating safe, inclusive public skateparks and empowering young people through skateboarding.

We provide grant funding, expert guidance on skatepark development, and youth skate programs that foster creativity, resilience, and connection. We also help remove barriers by offering access to skateboarding equipment and resources, ensuring every young person can participate, regardless of their financial circumstances.

From grassroots advocacy to hands-on youth development, our work helps turn skateparks into active community hubs.

We envision thriving, healthy, and sustainable communities where young people have equitable access to safe and free outdoor spaces. Together, we can ensure that anyone who wants to skate has the opportunity and a safe and welcoming place to do it!
