Every skatepark is essentially a DIY park. They all start with a group of activists willing to take matters into their own hands. Some take the issue up with City Hall and support the project through advocacy, fundraising, and so on. Others take a more direct route; they get some concrete and a few tools and start building it.

Almost every national skatepark building company has staff that started our by building concrete quarterpipes and ledges. Twenty years ago skateboarding only a few skateboarders had the right amount of vision and work ethic to develop their own specialized skills for creating skateparks. Today, thanks to these pioneers and the internet (among other things), people are aware that skateparks can be incredibly creative and unique architectural marvels. It all started with DIY.
