Case Study: Vancouver, BC Plaza |

What's so exceptional about Vancouver's newest street plaza? A better question might be what's not
exceptional about it.
By leveraging existing infrastructure in a marginalized region of downtown Vancouver, BC, crime has been
slashed and the expectation of skateboarders exceeded for the amazingly low cost of $250,000 (Canadian) for
26,000 sq/ft of skate plaza.
Further, the city reports that skateboarders who would normally never be found in a skatepark frequent
a facility designed specifically by them, and for them - alone a testament of success.
Accurately duplicating urban landmarks
by featuring exotic materials such as brick and granite, the plaza draws skateboarders using public
transportation traveling there from throughout the city.
For their part, the city of Vancouver have effectively "funneled" commuting skateboarders by actually
removing anti-skate devices on "paths" selected as ideal between the plaza and the nearby train station to
minimize negative impact with residents of the neighborhood.
Little wonder the facility has been the talk of the skateboarding world.
